Padre Pio was born Francesco Forgione in 1887 in Pietrelcina, Italy. He entered the Capuchin Franciscans at fifteen and was ordained a priest in 1910. He founded the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza, a hospital adjoining the friary, in 1956. He died in 1968 and was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2002.
