Francesco di Pietro di Bernardone was born in Assisi around 1181 and lived until 1226. The son of a prosperous cloth merchant, he renounced his inheritance in the public square of Assisi in 1206 and lived the rest of his life in voluntary poverty. He founded the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans) in 1209 and, with Saint Clare, the Order of Poor Ladies (Poor Clares) in 1212. He received the stigmata at La Verna in September 1224, the first recorded case of the wounds of Christ on a human body. His feast falls October 4. Pope Francis took his name on election in 2013.
