She founded the Obras Sociais Irmã Dulce in Salvador in 1959 — a network of hospitals, schools, and shelters that today serves millions of Brazilians each year. John Paul II beatified her in 2011; Pope Francis canonized her on October 13, 2019, making her the first Brazilian-born saint of the Catholic Church.
