A soft, devotional resin incense honoring Saint Charbel Makhlouf, the Lebanese Maronite hermit whose tomb became one of the most celebrated sites of Catholic devotion in the Middle East.
The fragrance is composed in honor of the phenomenon long associated with him: after his death in 1898, his body was found incorrupt and gave forth a sweet, oil-like perfume that drew pilgrims from across Lebanon and beyond. The blend translates that tradition into a gentle 4/5 composition — present enough for liturgy, restrained enough for personal devotion at a home altar or before an icon.
Saint Charbel was born Youssef Antoun Makhlouf in 1828 in the village of Bekaa Kafra, in the mountains of northern Lebanon. He entered the Lebanese Maronite Order at twenty-three, was ordained a priest, and after sixteen years in community life withdrew to the hermitage of Saints Peter and Paul at Annaya, where he lived in silent prayer until his death on Christmas Eve, 1898. He was beatified by Pope Paul VI in 1965 and canonized by the same pope in 1977. The Maronite Catholic Church, of which he is the most beloved saint, is in full communion with Rome and traces its origins to the early Syriac tradition of Mount Lebanon.
