The medal — popularly known as the Miraculous Medal — spread rapidly through the nineteenth century and remains one of the most widely worn Catholic sacramentals. Saint Catherine Labouré was canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1947; her incorrupt body is venerated at the chapel on Rue du Bac.
