The lily is the traditional flower of Marian purity, and the blend was composed to echo the iconography of the Miraculous Medal — Mary standing on the globe with rays of grace streaming from her hands. The kit fits daily Marian devotion: the Miraculous Medal novena, the litany of Loreto, and the household consecration to the Immaculate Heart that the Miraculous Medal vision launched in 1830.

Catherine Labouré, a young Daughter of Charity at the Rue du Bac in Paris, received a series of visions of the Blessed Virgin in 1830 and was asked to have a medal struck according to a design Mary herself showed her. The medal — now known across the Catholic world as the Miraculous Medal — was first distributed in 1832 and has been carried by hundreds of millions of Catholics since. Catherine was canonized in 1947.
