The blue and gold grains echo the mantle of Nossa Senhora Aparecida and the dark terracotta image found in 1717 in the Paraíba do Sul river. The resin was first used by Pope Benedict XVI in May 2007 at the canonization Mass of Friar Galvão; it has since been used at Mass inside Saint Peter's Basilica. The fragrance is soft and penetrating with abundant smoke, at a measured 1/5 intensity suited to long sustained prayer.
The statue was pulled from the river by three local fishermen — Domingos Garcia, João Alves, and Filipe Pedroso — who had returned with empty nets until the figure of the Virgin emerged from the water. The image is enshrined today in the Basilica of Aparecida, the second-largest Catholic basilica in the world. Pope Pius XI declared her the official patroness of Brazil in 1930.
