The Immaculate Conception is the Catholic dogma that Mary was preserved free from original sin from the first moment of her conception, in view of the merits of Christ. It was solemnly defined by Pope Pius IX in the bull Ineffabilis Deus on December 8, 1854, and four years later Mary identified herself in those terms at Lourdes, telling Bernadette Soubirous: "I am the Immaculate Conception." December 8 is the feast in the universal calendar and the patronal feast of countries including the United States, Portugal, Brazil, Spain, and the Philippines. Saint Maximilian Kolbe, the great twentieth-century apostle of the Immaculata, called her "the masterpiece of God's mercy."
