Michael — whose name in Hebrew means "who is like God?" — appears across Scripture as the prince of the heavenly host, the angel who casts Satan out of heaven in the book of Revelation. Pope Leo XIII composed the prayer beginning "Sancte Michael Archangele, defende nos in proelio" in 1886 after a vision of spiritual warfare facing the Church. The prayer was added to the Leonine Prayers and is widely recited today after Mass in many parishes.
