The devotion takes its name from a 1700 baroque painting by Johann Georg Schmidtner kept in Saint Peter am Perlach, Augsburg, Germany. The image shows Mary untying knots from a long white ribbon, surrounded by angels. The young Father Jorge Mario Bergoglio encountered the painting while studying in Germany in 1986 and brought the devotion back to Buenos Aires, where it spread across Latin America and has reached the global Church since his election as Pope Francis in 2013.
